ABOUT THE EXPEDITION
Ladakh, known as “the land of high passes,” is famous for its natural beauty and thrilling adventures. With its arid mountains, deserted region, clear lakes, high mountain passes, and challenging roads, it’s no wonder Ladakh is a popular destination for adventure seekers. The region is also home to various monasteries, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in Ladakhi culture and history. But there’s another side of Ladakh, less travelled yet equally alluring— its remarkable birdlife.
Until recently, Ladakh wasn’t on the radar as a birding destination. Its extreme climate, secluded landscapes, and inaccessibility made it difficult for travelers to explore its rich wildlife. However, with improved road connectivity, especially the gentle curves of the Leh-Manali highway, bird enthusiasts, nature lovers, and naturalist have begun to discover its treasures.
Ladakh’s wildlife, though lesser-known, is fascinating. While many have heard of snow leopards, long-tailed marmots, double-humped camels, and kiangs, the region is also home to a diverse of bird species uniquely adapted to the elevation and extreme climate. For wildlife photographers and nature enthusiasts, witnessing these birds thriving in their natural habitat is an unforgettable experience. Ladakh’s birding scene is just beginning to unfold, offering a new reason to explore this stunning region.
