ABOUT THE EXPEDITION
During winter, leading expeditions in Ladakh becomes nearly impossible due to heavy snowfall and extreme weather conditions. However, a few peaks remain accessible during this challenging season, and UT Peak is one of them. It's an excellent choice for beginner climbers aiming to summit a 6,000-meter peak.
Standing at 6,070 meters above sea level, UT Peak is located 90 km from Leh in the eastern part of Ladakh. Surrounded by stunning snow-capped mountains, it offers panoramic views of the Zanskar and Ladakh Ranges, part of the Greater Himalayas. While UT Peak is surrounded by many other peaks, it stands out as one of the best for aspiring climbers. The ascent is both physically and mentally demanding, with challenges such as camping in the snow. However, the breathtaking scenery—including views of the Karakoram and other majestic ranges—makes the effort rewarding. On clear days, climbers can even spot famous peaks such as Nun, Kun, and Saser Kangri.
UT Peak was first scaled in 2019 by the Ladakh Mountain Guide Association (LMGA), a passionate group of local mountain guides. The peak was named to commemorate Ladakh's designation as a Union Territory in the same year.
